UCLA wants to see that you’ve held leadership position(s) and they want you to talk about them.

As the school year was about to end, three friends gathered in the college counseling room at Foshay Learning Center, a K-12 public school near USC.

The goal is to complete at least one personal essay (600-2,500 words) and develop material for future essays.

Your GPA is 3.9, your SATs are over 1800 and you want to go to UCLA. So how do you distinguish yourself from the multitude? In this third and final blog in a series we’ll be talking about the importance of L. Don’t pretend that you were president when you weren’t. It can also be improving your grades or improving the lives of those less fortunate through your community service work. This is where you let UCLA know how you weren’t a fly by night soccer player. Or you worked with the drama department for four years even when you weren’t the lead. You don’t have to save the world but it couldn’t hurt!

On a recent tour of UCLA’s campus, I learned firsthand from admissions what they’re looking for in an essay.

Any place in which you were organizing or leading others. Just like your parents and teachers, UCLA likes to see improvement.

Undergrads at this esteemed university don’t mince words when boasting about all that UCLA has to offer.

As a geography and environmental science double-major proudly declares, “There’s nothing that can’t be accomplished at UCLA.

The possibilities are endless, and the resources are unparalleled.” Moreover, students appreciate the “ideal” location as well as the “pride of going to a Division I school with more NCAA championships than any other college/university.” Perhaps more notable, “UCLA is the kind of school that pushes you to work hard academically but reminds you that interaction with people outside of the classroom is just as important.” Students are continually impressed by their professors who are “leaders in their field.” Indeed, most consider it “a privilege to study under them.” While some undergrads caution that you might encounter some teachers simply “in it for the research,” others insist, “Most professors care about their students.” A political science major interjects, saying that professors “are willing to work extra hours with students and help us with anything we need.” An English major concurs, sharing, “I have never had a professor that I did not feel comfortable approaching, which has made my academic experience incredibly more beneficial.” As this grateful junior succinctly explains, “UCLA is the campus.

The people, the weather, the academics, the sports; it has absolutely everything I could ever want.” UCLA “is the mold that fits you.” More than 30,000 undergraduates and more than 1,000 student groups virtually assure that “there is no ‘typical’ student” to be found at UCLA.
